Long time, no blog

Filed under: Gear — hdls @ 5:58 am

For all you regular readers (Hi Mom!), it has been a while since I blogged. I’ve been busy and have a thing or two to blog about.

My current projects are the poor man’s Recce / 3 Gun / Intermediate AR and getting my .308 ready for Boomershoot. And speaking of Boomershoot, I’ve invented a new gun game – Long Gun Limbo. I’ll do a post in a bit about this new game that is not sweeping the nation.

The AR for home defense

A great article written by Celia Bigelow and Aubrey Blankenship discussing why an AR style rifle is the a great choice for self-defense for women.

Sorry, President Obama. As young women, we prefer an AR-15 “assault” rifle with a 30-round magazine for self-defense.
In fact, we wouldn’t want to be stuck at home without one. In the wake of mass murders like Sandy Hook and the horrific rapes and murders of thousands of women each year, pepper spray, mace, or five-round handheld pistols aren’t going to cut it.

So what’s a girl to do? When choosing our tool for home defense, we want the best — in accuracy, handling, and aesthetics. The best choice by all three criteria is — hands down — the AR-15.
AR-15s are the most popular rifle in the U.S.; more than 3 million Americans own one. And its popularity isn’t with criminals — assault rifles account for only 0.6 percent of murders every year. Rather, the semi-automatic AR-15 is the gun of choice for many hunters, target shooters, and home defenders.

Home Intruders Decide Not to Stick Around After Seeing Their ‘Victim’ Holding an AR-15

After seeing the barrel of an AR-15 staring them in the face, the two men fled from the apartment. No shots were fired and no one was injured. In fact, the rifle wasn’t even loaded at the time of the incident, Raymond said.

Reloads for the revolver crowd

One of the reason that many folks like autoloaders for conceal carry is the ease of reloading – drop the mag and insert a new one and done. Reloads can be a little tougher for a revolver user and here is a review of gear that can help. If you think a revolver can’t be reloaded quickly watch this.

Ambi Charging Handle

For anyone that is either left handed or shoots leftie because they are cross eye dominant there is a new charging handle out for you AR you may want to consider.

My wife is right handed, but shoots left handed because she is cross eye dominant. One of the challenges with that setup is working the charging handle. Well, good news on that front. Rainier Arms has teamed up with AXTS Weapon Systems to release a new ambidextrous charging handle – the Raptor.

We received our package from Rainier Arms this week and I opened it up and snapped a couple of pictures of the Raptor sitting next to a Bravo Company Manufacturing Gunfighter charging handle – a Mod 4 (medium) if I recall correctly.

We haven’t had a chance to take the new charging handle out shooting yet, but I’ll report back after we’ve put a few rounds down range.

(And yes, I know the photo kinda sucks. I’ll see if I can get better ones.)
